In the years ahead

I was honored to be asked to be an honorary godmother for the oldest of these delightful young women and will certainly continue to pray for them and their family in the years ahead.
In his homily our Archbishop referred to the Old Testament reading for this Sunday(Exodus 16:2-4,12-15)You know the one where the Israelites are complaining about being taken away from the wonderful land of Egypt(!)and how miserable life was where they were now. The Archbishop emphasized the goodness of God to the people in the O.T and how we can also take comfort from this(ie God not giving us what we deserve)when so often our own lives can be reflections of these Old Testament people in our greed and selfish ways.

He then went on to talk about what the sacrament of Confirmation was. When we are baptized we receive the Holy Spirit and full of God's grace became new creations and members of God's family. At Confirmation the Holy Spirit comes to us in a more specific way and fills us with the grace needed to live each individual life as a member of the body of Christ. So while we all receive the Gift we are not all called to live the same life(ie not all clones!), some will need strengthening in some areas that others will not because they have not been called to be that particular part of the body and so on.Of course he added too at the time of Confirmation we are still very young and don't usually know where God is calling us but as we slowly grow and walk in Christ the grace will be there to meet all situations and needs. We were reminded in closing of Blessed Mary Mc Killop, whose centenary is later this month and at the time of her confirmation would not have known that God would call her to do a such a marvelous work for Him here in the southland of the Holy Spirit!
